Generative AI

This guide walks you through the considerations of using generative artificial intelligence (gen AI): selecting gen AI tools, best practices for using them, ethical considerations, and more.

MLA Style

Visit the MLA style center for the most up-to-date recommendations for citing AI content using MLA style. https://style.mla.org/citing-generative-ai-updated-revised/

The MLA style center does not recommend using the AI tool as the author of the content. Most citations begin with a description of the prompt in the "title of source" field, and use the name of the AI tool in the "title of container" element, followed by the version of the model, name of the company who published the tool, date the content was create, and URL.

Example:

“Describe the theme of nature in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park” prompt. ChatGPT, model GPT-4o, OpenAI, 23 Sept. 2024, chatgpt.com/share/66f1b0a0-d704-8000-be9a-85f53c850607.

APA Style

The APA blog addressed how to cite gen AI content in their post, "Citing generative AI in APA Style: Part 1—Reference formats," from Sept. 2025, and in a archived post, "How to Cite ChatGPT," April 2023. The recommended citation format is:

AI Company Name. (year, month day). Title of chat in italics [Description, such as Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat

  • Parenthetical citation: (AI Company Name, year)
  • Narrative citation: AI Company Name (year)

Example:

Perplexity AI. (2025, May 20). High school grammar topics [Generative AI chat]. Perplexity.
