Use the APA sample paper (Word)

APA supplies student and professional sample papers that can be used to set up a style template in Word. Begin by downloading the appropriate sample paper in DOCX format. Open the file with Microsoft Word and follow these steps to set up an APA style set.

  1. Select "Design" from the menu bar.

  2. The first option should represent the current document's style. We'll want to save that for future use. Document style set from Design menu
  3. Right click (CNTL + click) the current document's style set, then select "Save." Word menu bar with style save dialogue window open.
  4. Name the style set, making sure to save it to the Microsoft Office "Style Sets" folder. "Save as new style set" dialogue window.

Now, open your document (not the sample paper). Once again, select "Design" from the menu bar. This time, look for the newly added style set and select it. Design menu with saved style set selected.

You have now set the supplied APA formatting as your default Google style. Open your document (not the sample paper). You can now use the various styles (e.g., Title, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) from the style drop-down menu.
