European Patent Office Comprehensive, free patent database containing more than 60 million patents from over 80 countries. Contains patent applications as well as granted patents. The starting date of patent inclusion varies by country.

Google Patents Keyword searching available on patents back to 1790. Includes European patents (EPO) from 1978-present. Does not include other international patents, applications or patents granted very recently.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Resource includes images of patents from 1790 that can be searched using the patent number. Keyword searching is available for patents from 1976 - present. Quick and advanced search capabilities are available.
