About Archives & Manuscript Respositories
Archives and manuscript repositories preserve unique, original historical materials that are not usually available in published books or databases. These collections may include letters, diaries, photographs, government records, organizational files, oral histories, maps, and other primary sources that document people, institutions, and events.
Researchers use archival materials to develop original interpretations, uncover personal perspectives, and examine the past through firsthand evidence. Because archival collections are often unpublished and rare, they can provide insight into voices and experiences that may not appear in traditional secondary sources.
Many archives now offer digitized materials online, but most collections still require in-person research. Learning how to identify and locate archival collections can help you discover rich sources for historical inquiry and deepen your understanding of the past.
