Want help? You've got options

EMU College of Education students have multiple options for getting research advice.

You can  make an appointment to work with the Education Librarian over Zoom: Schedule Appointment.

You can also get one-on-one in person coaching from EMU librarians in-person at the library.

You can get quick advice by using the Ask a Librarian chat system (see Get Research help at right).

If you are having trouble accessing an electronic resource, see Help with Online Access Problems at bottom of this page.

Zoom Appointments with the Education Librarian

Zoom appointments work great!

Getting an appointment
You can use the online scheduler to find a time that works for you and set up an appointment. The system will send you a confirmation email with a Zoom link. It will also send you a reminder before your appointment. You do need to use your @emich email to sign up for an appointment, because appointments are only for EMU students.

At the Appointment
You will be able to talk to the librarian and share your screen, so the librarian can coach you on how to search. Most students leave the appointment feeling much better about progress on finding the information they need.

Cancelling an Appointment
The confirmation and reminder emails you receive include a link for cancelling an appointment. The librarian will receive an email, so they know you have cancelled or rescheduled.

In-person Help from a Librarian

About Ask a Librarian 24/7

Ask a Librarian 24/7 is a service where you can chat back and forth with a librarian to get quick answers.

You enter your question and a real person with a graduate degree in library science will answer. Sometimes a librarian from EMU will answer, but sometimes it will be a librarian from a different college. We partner with librarians elsewhere, so this service can be offered 24/7.

Usually, the librarian can answer your question even if they are not from EMU. When they can't answer your question they will refer your question to EMU librarians who will answer via email.

If you have a big question, such as needing help with doing a literature review, you will get the best help by making an appointment with an EMU Librarian or stopping by the Library Research Center.  The Ask a Librarian service is helpful for quick questions, such help finding the full text of an article or a specific book. It's also helpful if you need help right away and it's too late to make an appointment or to visit Library Research Center.

Tips for using Ask a Librarian:
1. Don't be surprised if the librarian asks you some questions. Sometimes they need more information to give you the best advice.

2. Generally, this service is for tips to get you started. Librarians can recommend specific databases or other sources and help you with how to choose keywords and enter the search. It isn't a service where the will librarian send you articles.

3. In some cases, a librarian might invite you to switch over to Zoom. This can be very helpful, so you can share your screen and the librarian can coach you on the search. It can be much faster to work together over Zoom. Note that you don't have to use your camera in the Zoom session to share screens, so you can get help this way even if you are researching in your PJs. Note: In some cases a librarian won't be able to offer use of Zoom during an Ask a Librarian session.

4. If you reach the point in the interaction where you have enough advice to search on your own, please let the librarian know, so they can answer questions from other students.
