Archives staff will accommodate requests as we are able and suggest contacting the archives at least 24-48 hours in advance of your desired appointment time. The Eastern Michigan University archives is home to the Mark S.W. Jefferson papers. They pertain to the personal and professional life of geographer and Michigan State Normal College (MSNC) Faculty Mark Jefferson. Jefferson was the head of the geography department at MSNC from his arrival in 1901 to his retirement in 1939. Throughout his career, Mark Jefferson contributed to the field of geography not only on the campus of MSNC, but also worked on several projects for the city of Ypsilanti, the United States, and the world. Jefferson was a well-known and sought after geographer who wrote numerous books and articles, conducted extensive research in the field, was a charter member of the Association of American Geographers (AAG), and served on the American Commission to Negotiate Peace after World War I.
The purpose of this libguide is to understand Mark Jefferson’s contributions to the field of geography locally and globally. Jefferson’s contributions to MSNC, the city of Ypsilanti, the country, the AAG, and from the American Commission to Negotiate Peace after World War I are still felt today. This libguide also gives a brief introduction to the Jefferson papers.
